The Aegean Sea is named after King Aegeus of Athens, Greece (Hellas) who drowned himself in the sea after believing his son, Theseus, had died during his quest to slay the Minotaur in Crete. When Theseus forgot to hoist a white sail to signal his success, his father, Aegeus, seeing the expected black sail of defeat, threw himself from a cliff into the sea below

The Greek islands have been continuously inhabited by Greeks and have been significant for thousands of years, with human settlement dating back to the Neolithic period (c. 7000 BCE).

Major ancient civilizations like the Greek (Hellenic) Minoan (Crete), Greek (Hellenic) Cycladic, and Greek (Hellenic) Mycenaean cultures flourished on the islands, developing advanced art, architecture, and maritime skills, leaving behind a rich archaeological legacy. Today, the islands remain important cultural and historical centers, attracting visitors for their history, beauty, and unique way of life, like the famously long-lived population on Ikaria.

Some Greek islands are often located off the coasts of modern countries whose shores were already inhabited by Greeks before antiquity, such as the coasts of Asia Minor and northern Epirus. It was only in the 20th century that the displacement of Greek populations led to a change in the ethnic landscape: today, Greek-populated islands are situated near regions now inhabited by other ethnic groups, such as in Asia Minor and Northern Epirus.

The Aegean Sea of Greece (Hellas) is so blue due to a lack of phytoplankton and suspended particles, which allows sunlight to penetrate deep and scatter, reflecting the blue wavelength. Its clear, calm waters and a light-colored seafloor, often made of crushed marble, also contribute to its intense blue hue by reflecting light more effectively. The water itself also absorbs red and yellow light more than blue light, further enhancing the blue appearance, especially in large depths

One of the greatest creations of Greek Aegean civilization is its art, unique in its time, not only in the Aegean but also in the entire world. The austerity and inventiveness that characterize the artist of the Bronze Age are reflected in the artifacts he produces. Since that ancient era, the Aegean has been spiritually charged and is reflected in literature, poetry and art.

The Early Greek (Hellenic) Cycladic II (2700–2400/2300 BC) marks the heyday of the Greek (Hellenic) Cycladic civilization, with the expansion of settlements and cemeteries, the development of metalwork (bronze weapons and tools), the flourishing of marble sculpture (excellent figurines and vases) and an increase in trade exchanges with mainland Greece, Crete and the Aegean. The Early Greek Cycladic III (2300–2000 BC) is the last phase of the civilization, which is characterized by the decline and change in the characteristics of pottery.

The achievements of vase painting during the Early Greek Cycladic II and Early Greek Cycladic III periods and the introduction of polychrome in the decoration of Middle Cycladic vases certainly contributed to the emergence of painting as an important means of artistic expression. Thus, while the Early Cycladic period could be characterized as the century of sculpture for the Cyclades, the Middle Bronze Age (c. 2000–1650 BC), -Middle Cycladic- and the early Late Cycladic could justifiably claim the title of the century of great painting.

MadeinMycountry Belize: Caribbean dream destination!

Belize is a country on the north-eastern coast of Central America. It is bordered by Mexico to the north, the Caribbean Sea to the east, and Guatemala to the west and south. It also shares a maritime boundary with Honduras to the southeast. Belize is a member of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), and is considered part of the Caribbean region and the historical British West Indies.

The Belize Barrier Reef turned 10,000 years old on June 8, 2022, and Belize is celebrating the longevity of this natural wonder by pledging to continue preserving it for generations today and those to come. The second-largest barrier reef in the world, it extends the full length of Belize, forming an enormous lagoon along its coast and protecting its shores from large waves, even during extreme weather. This also creates an ideal habitat for a wide variety of oceanic creatures, from rock-like living coral to endangered sea turtles to over 500 species of fish in every color of the rainbow.

Belize has committed to preserving a full 30% of its oceanic territory— over 10,000 square kilometers, including each of its seven marine protected areas. Combined with other efforts like a total ban on single-use plastics taking effect in 2022, this has made Belize a leader in conservation in the Caribbean and, truly, the world.

Belize’s Barrier Reef has long drawn SCUBA divers, snorkelers and fisherman from across the globe, so it’s no surprise it was named a UNESCO world heritage site in 1996.

The region is also home to 3 of only 4 atolls in all of the Atlantic Ocean, numerous patch reefs that dot the offshore waters and the world-famous “Great Blue Hole” as well. Belize is an aquatic wonderland that Charles Darwin himself once called “the most remarkable reef in the West Indies,” and Belize aims to keep it that way!

Africa is the world’s second-largest and second-most populous continent after Asia. At about 30.3 million km2 (11.7 million square miles) including adjacent islands, it covers 20% of Earth’s land area and 6% of its total surface area. With nearly 1.4 billion people, it accounts for about 18% of the world’s human population. Africa’s population is the youngest among all the continents. Average age in 2012 was 19.7, when the worldwide median age was 30.4. Based on 2024 projections, Africa’s population will reach 3.8 billion people by 2099.

Africa is the ‘cradle of humankind’. Fossils found in Africa, show that human beings and their closest relatives the gorilla and chimpanzees were born and evolved in Africa.

There are 54 countries in Africa today, according to the United Nations. Africa is the second largest continent in the world. Africa is home to the world’s largest desert and home of the world’s longest river: The Nile. Most of the world’s diamonds come from Africa (around 95% as well as 50% of the world’s gold) and it produces 70% of the world’s cocoa beans!

The continent has up to 90 percent of the world’s chromium and platinum. The largest reserves of cobalt, diamonds, platinum and uranium in the world are in Africa. It holds 65 per cent of the world’s arable land and ten percent of the planet’s internal renewable fresh water source.

Africa, the second-largest continent, is bounded by the Mediterranean Sea, the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Atlantic Ocean. It is divided in half almost equally by the Equator. The continent includes the islands of Cape Verde, Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles, and Comoros.

The number one reason for travellers visiting Africa is to embark on a wildlife safari or climb Kilimanjaro. While Africa certainly has some of the most extensive wildlife viewing opportunities and one of the seven summits, there are many other reasons to travel to Africa.

Visiting Africa for the first time is an experience beyond description. It is a continent brimming with magic – from it’s immensely beautiful and diverse landscapes to its cultural richness and lifechanging wildlife encounters.
